People live on every continent except Antarctica (too cold!). The country with the most people is India. China has almost as many. Together, those two countries have more people than the rest of the world combined.

For most of human history, population growth was extremely slow. It took roughly 300,000 years for the global population to reach 1 billion, around the year 1804. Then things accelerated dramatically. The second billion arrived in just 123 years (1927). The third took 33 years (1960). We hit 8 billion in late 2022.
Why Did Growth Explode?
Two major factors drove the population boom of the 19th and 20th centuries. First, advances in medicine and sanitation drastically reduced death rates, especially among infants and children. Second, agricultural improvements (particularly the Green Revolution of the 1960s) allowed food production to keep pace with growing demand. People were living longer and fewer children were dying before their fifth birthday.
Why Is Growth Slowing?
As countries develop economically, families tend to have fewer children. This pattern is called the "demographic transition." When parents are confident their children will survive to adulthood, and when women have access to education and employment, birth rates fall. In many wealthy countries today, the fertility rate is below 2.1 children per woman, the level needed to maintain a stable population without immigration.
Where Do People Live?
About 60% of the world's population lives in Asia. Africa is the fastest-growing continent and is projected to more than double its population by 2100. This unprecedented expansion was driven by declining mortality (particularly infant mortality) thanks to germ theory, vaccination, antibiotics, improved sanitation, and the dramatic increase in agricultural yields from mechanization, synthetic fertilizers (the Haber-Bosch process), and the Green Revolution.

The total fertility rate (TFR) measures the average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime at current rates. The global TFR has fallen from about 5.0 in 1950 to approximately 2.3 in 2026. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the highest-fertility region (TFR around 4.3), while East Asia has some of the lowest rates on Earth. South Korea's TFR dropped to 0.72 in 2023, far below replacement level, prompting the government to describe it as a "demographic emergency."
The causes of fertility decline are multifactorial: urbanization (children are economic liabilities in cities, unlike on farms), female education and labor-force participation, access to contraception, declining child mortality (parents no longer need "insurance" births), and shifting cultural norms around family size.

The Neolithic Revolution (the transition to agriculture, beginning around 10,000 BCE) enabled gradual growth to roughly 200-300 million by the start of the Common Era. Growth remained slow and uneven through the medieval period, with catastrophic setbacks like the Black Death (which may have killed 75-200 million people globally between 1346 and 1353) and various regional famines.
The first billion was reached around 1804. What followed was unprecedented in the species' history: successive billions arrived in 123 years (1927), 33 years (1960), 14 years (1974), 13 years (1987), 12 years (1999), 12 years (2011), and 11 years (2022). The acceleration reflected the compound effects of the Industrial Revolution, germ theory, the Haber-Bosch process for synthetic nitrogen fixation, the Green Revolution in agriculture, and mass vaccination programs.
The Demographic Transition, Revisited
The classical demographic transition model describes a four-stage progression from high birth/death rates to low birth/death rates. Most of the world's wealthiest nations completed this transition by the late 20th century. What has surprised many demographers is the emergence of a possible "Stage 5," in which fertility drops well below replacement (TFR 2.1) and populations begin to contract. South Korea (TFR 0.72 in 2023), Japan (1.20), Italy (1.24), and Spain (1.19) exemplify this pattern.
The drivers are complex and interrelated. Urbanization transforms children from economic assets (farm labor) to economic costs (housing, education, childcare in high-cost cities). Female educational attainment and labor-force participation correlate strongly with lower fertility across virtually all societies studied. Cultural norms around marriage and childbearing have shifted, with rising ages at first marriage and growing proportions of adults who remain childless by choice. The cost of housing in major global cities has increasingly been cited as a proximate barrier to family formation.
Regional Divergence
The global aggregate conceals dramatic regional differences. Sub-Saharan Africa is the only region with a TFR still above 4.0 (approximately 4.3 as of 2024) and is projected to more than double its population from roughly 1.2 billion to 2.5-3.0 billion by 2100. Nigeria alone could surpass 500 million, potentially overtaking the United States as the world's third-most-populous country. Meanwhile, Europe's population has already begun to decline in absolute terms in several countries, including Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia, and Lithuania. China's population appears to have peaked in 2022 at approximately 1.426 billion and has begun declining, a shift with enormous economic and geopolitical implications.
Projection Uncertainty
The UN's 2024 World Population Prospects (medium variant) projects a global peak of approximately 10.3 billion around 2086, followed by a slow decline. However, the 95% prediction interval for 2100 ranges from about 8.3 billion (if fertility falls faster than expected) to roughly 12.3 billion (if it falls more slowly). The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), using a different modeling approach that incorporates subnational data on education and contraceptive access, projected in a widely cited 2020 Lancet paper that the global population could peak as early as 2064 at 9.7 billion and decline to 8.8 billion by 2100. More recent data from East Asia suggests even those projections may have been conservative about the pace of fertility decline.
Implications
Population size and structure affect virtually every major policy domain. Climate models incorporate population projections as a key variable; the difference between 8 billion and 12 billion people in 2100 has enormous implications for emissions trajectories. Aging populations in developed nations face mounting fiscal pressure on pension and healthcare systems (Japan spends roughly 11% of GDP on pensions alone). Rapidly growing populations in sub-Saharan Africa face the challenge of generating sufficient employment, education, and infrastructure, but also have an opportunity for a "demographic dividend" if the large youth cohort can be productively employed. Migration flows, driven by differential growth rates and economic opportunity, will likely intensify as a political and economic issue.
